Outwards/Inwards

    From ebb to flow, let my heart, let my hands live to their own rhythm, from a spring to an autumn, from a systole to a diastole, through their thrusting, generous, extroverted days alongside their days of inwardness, meditation, inner turns and changes –from a caress to an embrace, the hand may be stir, the word be awakening or comprehension, the gesture may be embrace.
    And so is my sculpture, now as a blow, all in a dynamic tension, now gathered as a coil, now resting expectant in reserve, in a fine poise.
    As early as the winter of 1980, my first sculptures were pulsing with this beat : first came the bright “Sheaf” (“La Gerbe”), then, poised and running poured “Woman’s dignity” (“Dignité de la femme”), later came the inwardness of “Inner turnabout” (“Retournement intérieur”), an abstract shape which soon after resulted in a figurative version -“Woman sunk in meditation”/”La Femme recueillie”- before a return to brightness was operated with “Couple folded in each other’s arms” (“Couple enlacé”), the brightness and extroversion of which kept prevailing long after.
    After thirty-five years of that, I now try to find a fine balance such as the one in “The Sail” (“La Voile”), my very first marble (1977) : a steady voice, a stable base.
